The resignation of the Lebanese Minister of Foreign Affairs after his “offensive” statements

Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Lebanese caretaker government, Charbel Wahba, resigned from his duties yesterday, due to his insulting statements to the Gulf states, which turned into a political crisis, and met with widespread rejection and condemnation in Lebanon. A decision was taken to appoint the Minister of Defense, Deputy Prime Minister, Zeina Aker, as acting Minister of Foreign Affairs in his place.

Wahba, who had apologized for his statements yesterday morning, handed over to President Michel Aoun and Caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab a letter asking to be relieved of his ministerial responsibilities, stressing that he took this step in light of recent developments and the circumstances that accompanied his speech to one of the stations. After his meeting with Diab, Wahba hoped that “this issue will be closed completely, so that Lebanese relations with Arab countries and friendly and brotherly countries will be based on mutual respect.”

Meanwhile, the residence of the Saudi ambassador to Lebanon, Walid Al-Bukhari, was filled with political, religious and popular delegations in solidarity with the Kingdom, while Al-Bukhari denied “everything that is said about Saudi Arabia’s endeavor to deport the Lebanese from its lands.”
