The new energy world is picking up speed across Europe – its players met in Munich

Munich / Pforzheim – Three days full of innovation and exciting discussions on energy topics, that was The smarter E Europe Restart 2021. Overall, the outcome was very positive. In the corona-related compact restart format, the innovation platform of the new energy world was a complete success. With a total of over 450 exhibitors, 45,000 square meters of exhibition space and around 26,000 visitors from 93 countries, the event took place again for the first time in over two years. The response from exhibitors, visitors, organizers and partners: “We are so happy to finally meet again in person!”

Matthias Taft, CEO BayWa re AG: “We are delighted that, after almost two years of pandemic, it is again possible for the first time to meet our customers, suppliers and colleagues in person. To be part of The smarter E Europe Restart 2021 is a great opportunity for us to present our innovations and expand our network. ”

The core issues of a sustainable energy and mobility industry are the focus of the innovation platform: renewable energies, decentralization, digitization and sector coupling as well as intelligent and networked energy systems. Innovative technologies, new business models and future-oriented projects were presented in the accompanying conferences and trade fair forums. A total of four energy trade fairs took place on the innovation platform from 6 to 8 October 2021: Intersolar Europe, ees Europe, Power2Drive Europe and EM-Power Europe accompanied by 2 conferences (Intersolar Europe Conference and ees Europe Conference) and 3 trade fair forums. Intersolar celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. All trade fairs have one vision in common: an intelligent, sustainable and networked energy supply. The smarter E Europe gives the new energy world a name.

The industry has a tailwind: the new energy world is booming

The European solar market is booming. According to the industry association SolarPower Europe, 18.2 gigawatts (GW) of photovoltaic capacity (PV capacity) were newly installed in 2020. That is a growth of 11 percent compared to the previous year. And the forecasts continue to point to growth. Also with regard to jobs: The Swiss plant manufacturer Meyer-Burger, exhibitor at Intersolar Europe Restart 2021, is revitalizing the Solar Valley in Saxony-Anhalt with two factories for solar cells and modules and creating new jobs in the new energy world. In order for the energy transition to succeed, however, an even greater expansion of renewable energies is necessary. According to Carsten Körnig, General Manager of the Bundesverband Solarwirtschaft e. V. (BSW), a solar and storage turbo is now needed to replace fossil fuel power plant capacities in good time and to avoid an impending electricity shortage in the near future. In addition to the faster expansion of photovoltaics with classic roof and open space systems, building-integrated PV systems (BIPV) and agri-photovoltaics (Agri-PV) on agricultural areas can contribute just as much as “floating PV”. BayWa re, Solar Projects GmbH and Rem Tec Srl presented innovative Agri-PV and floating PV systems and products. Another highlight showed that photovoltaic systems combined with electrical energy storage for grid control and the management of grid bottlenecks and can become the backbone of energy infrastructures in the future: The joint sessions of the ees Europe Conference and the Intersolar Europe Conference on the combination of PV and memory.

Storage systems: particularly important for the energy transition

The expansion of solar and wind energy is the first step towards further decarbonisation of the energy industry. But efficient power storage systems are also crucial – and the storage market is booming, as is battery production, regardless of whether it is large or home storage systems: investments and government subsidies running into the billions, rapidly growing sales and many new players are shaping the market. On site, exhibitors such as Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., Sungrow Power Supply Co. Ltd. and Fenecon GmbH orientation in the dynamic battery storage markets. The specialist lectures and discussions at the ees Europe Conference were also dedicated to the topic, as were the ees AWARD winners Commeo GmbH, Enphase Energy NL and SAX Power GmbH. “It’s amazing how many people are now thinking about grid security, energy storage and renewable energies. Commercial storage facilities in particular are in great demand because the companies can see how much it will bring if they cut load peaks and thus relieve the network and save costs. We are enthusiastic about the response from the international specialist audience to our electricity storage solutions, ”says Franz-Josef Feilmeier, Managing Director of Fenecon GmbH.

Electromobility: connection between the new energy and the new mobility world

The role of electromobility in a new energy world, the charging infrastructure as an interface between mobility and the power grid and the prospects of the Vehicle2Grid concept as a game changer in the new mobility world – these are some of the focal points of the Power2Drive Europe Restart 2021. At the trade fair and the accompanying forum The makers of the energy transition in the transport sector met: manufacturers, suppliers, dealers and start-ups presented new developments and business models. The integration of Power2Drive Europe into the innovation platform of the new energy world shows exactly: In order for the mobility and transport sector to exhaust its potential, electric vehicles and the charging infrastructure must be viewed as part of the overall energy system. Powerful e-mobile batteries can not only be used as energy storage for the vehicle, but also as building blocks in the energy network. With the electric vehicles, decentralized storage capacities will be available for the energy transition. The basis are Vehicle2Grid (V2G), Vehicle2Home and Vehicle2Work solutions. “Charging infrastructure is a central element for the success of e-mobility – and at the fair we are bringing it together with topics such as storage, photovoltaics and renewable energies. This means that the entire energy and mobility sector is represented at one event – that is extremely exciting for us, ”says Karl Kolmsee, Director Product Portfolio Management at Webasto Customized Solutions.

Experience the energy transition in practice

As part of the EM-Power Europe Restart and the accompanying forum, visitors were able to experience the energy transition in real life. The presentation of the Energiewende Awards 2021 for the best energy suppliers in the DACH region was, as always, a highlight – the projects selected are specific and make the new energy world tangible. The Energiewende Award shows that every company can and must make its contribution to the energy transition, from locally operating municipal utilities to international energy companies. For example, Entega, Stadtwerke Karlsruhe, Stadtwerke Mühlheim am Main GmbH and Stadtwerke Bernau GmbH were selected for the Energy Transition 2021 category. Those interested can find the other winners here. Another highlight: the daily sessions on climate neutrality and how companies can achieve this. Because the economy has also recognized the signs of the times: More and more companies are supplying their operations with inexpensive and environmentally friendly electricity and operating their production processes in a climate-neutral manner. The path to becoming a climate-neutral company, sector coupling in buildings and neighborhoods as well as future topics relating to smart grids and network infrastructure were the focus topics of EM-Power Europe. “For us, the focus is on a sustainable energy supply through digitization and new business models in order to optimize CO2 emissions. At the grid edge, the interface between intelligent power grids and prosumers, the interplay between production, consumption and power storage is being redefined. In this way, renewable energies can be efficiently integrated and energy supply can be guaranteed flexibly and reliably, ”says Markus Mildner, Head of Global Sales, Siemens Smart Infrastructure.

Four fairs, one mission

Start-ups are also right on the innovation platform: The response to the start-up area and stage was very good – interested young companies were able to contact investors and other companies directly and drive their business forward as part of the business speed dating. Accelerating the transformation: Renewable energies around the clock, seven days a week, achieving a networked, clean and modern energy and mobility economy, tackling the opportunities and challenges of the entire industry together, not looking at the sectors in isolation, but synchronized, flexibility solutions driving forward concepts and concepts – that is the vision of The smarter E Europe. And the innovation platform for the new energy world is not alone: numerous international players in the modern energy industry gathered in Munich from October 6th to 8th, 2021. The smarter E Europe Restart 2021 is an important element of the restarting trade fair activity and also an important signal for the industry, which expressly welcomes this. Visitors and exhibitors who were unable to visit the innovation platform can subsequently experience articles, statements and interviews on Expo TV:

The smarter E Europe 2022 will take place with its four individual trade fairs (Intersolar Europe, ees Europe, Power2Drive Europe and EM-Power Europe) from May 11th to 13th, 2022 at Messe München.
