This week a surprising announcement from Dotemu and Tribute Games came along. They are working on a new brawler, set in the TMNT universe. When you see the first screenshots of this with their colorful pixel art style, you can immediately see the similarities with the titles of the same name from the 8- and 16-bit era. Given the huge success of Dotemu’s previous brawler, Streets of Rage 4, the franchise seems to be in good hands with that.

The new title will be called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge and is being developed by Tribute Games. This studio also has the necessary experience with brawlers, as they were responsible for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game and TMNT on the GameBoy Advance. They have also worked on other titles with a retro twist such as Panzer Paladin, Flinthook, Wizorb and Mercenary Kings. The style of the game clearly has many similarities with TMNT 2: The Arcade Game on NES, TMNT: Turtles in Time on SNES, TMNT: Hyperstone Heist on Sega MegaDrive and the aforementioned TMNT game on the GameBoy Advance. That’s not bad news at all, as these titles are seen as the pinnacle of the franchise and good brawlers in general. It is striking that the studio has opted for the original look from the 80s, as the Turtles have regularly changed drawing styles over the years. Which for me says something about the target group that Dotemu wants to appeal to for this title. In addition, the game will also be playable with four players at the same time, so get the pizza ready and get ready for old-fashioned couch co-op fun, cowabunga!
