Members of the press from other channels will no longer participate in the informative programs of the medical “task force” on the coronavirus COVID-19 that are transmitted through WIPR, the public radio station of Puerto Rico.
The information was originally disclosed by Univision’s Digital Edition news reporter Jeremy Ortiz on his Twitter account. Ortiz stressed that the decision was confirmed to him by the deputy press secretary of La Fortaleza, Michelle de la Cruz. The channel’s president, Eric Delgado, confirmed this to El Nuevo Día.
“Officially the @WIPRTV special program with the medical ‘task force’ will no longer have journalists from other television channels. Grateful for the opportunity given to us in past programs to exercise press freedom. #PuertoRico #Coronavirus # COVID19 ”, reads Ortiz’s message.
However, in the WIPR account on the same social network, it was indicated, in a contradictory and confusing way, that the information disclosed by Ortiz “is totally wrong”, although the only thing established is that journalists from different media are welcome to participate in the transmissions of the corporation, but makes it very clear that “the ‘Task Force’ does not correspond to our corporation.”
In expressions for El Nuevo Día, Delgado maintained that “These specific programs are orientation. I am grateful to the channels and journalists who were with us. But we have to comply with the public service of informing and educating. We need a space that focuses on guiding the people”.
Meanwhile, the president of Telemundo Puerto Rico, José Cancela, maintained in the account of the channel on Facebook that “until a few minutes ago I had hoped that WIPR would back down in not wanting to invite journalists from our local channels to the Task Force programs Unfortunately, everything indicates that WIPR is going to follow La Fortaleza’s instructions in wanting to silence the press, something that even President Trump does not dare to do. There is still time to rectify, but if the local press does not have access, Telemundo in good conscience, it cannot be lent to broadcast a propaganda program. “
The next informational program about the coronavirus in WIPR will be an update that will be offered this Monday at 10:00 a.m. the Department of Health.
