These cities have the most divorced residents

Couples who struggle with money appear to be more likely to split.

Fewer and fewer people marry, but still fewer divorce, according to the United States Census Bureau. In 2008, the marriage rate was 17.9 per 1,000 women; a decade later the figure was 16.6 per 1,000 women. The decline in divorce rates has been even more marked. It went from 10.5 per 1,000 women in 2008 to 7.7 per 1,000 women in 2018.

Tempo 24/7 looked at the percentage of residents who divorced cities in the United States with a population of at least 5,000 using the American Census Bureau’s American Community Survey 2018 to determine the divorce capital of each state.

Among all Americans aged 15 and over – some states allow people to marry under 18 with parental consent – 10.8% divorced and did not remarry. A further 2% of people in that age group are separated but not divorced from their spouses. The percentage of the divorced population varies from state to state and city to city. In some places, nearly a quarter of residents have divorced; in others – just over a tenth are.

Couples decide to call it closed for several reasons, but there are some common causes. Many studies over the years have tried to find an answer to why a marriage ends in divorce. Many of the reasons that are highlighted in almost all studies include lack of commitment, infidelity, excessive discussion and separate growth, according to the Institute of Family Studies.

Money is also a fairly common reason for spouses to go their own way. Couples who struggle with money appear to be more likely to split. In all but six states, the average family income of divorce capital is lower than the corresponding state median.

Working through a separation is a very stressful experience. Although much of the stress is emotional, there is often also a financial element. And lawyers don’t come cheap.

Methodology

To identify each state’s divorce capital, Tempo 24/7, examined the American Survey Bureau’s American Community Survey 2018’s five-year estimates to find the percentage of the 15-year-old population and more divorced. Only places with a population of 15 years and older than 5,000 were considered. Data on household income and poverty rates also come from the ACS. The definition of the census of those who are divorced includes only those who are legally divorced and who have not remarried. Those without a final divorce decree are classified as separate.
