This is Britain’s youngest grandmother, still 33 years old


AMERSHAM, KOMPAS.com – While usually at the age of 33 a woman is proud to welcome a new child into her life, Gemma Skinner actually already has grandchildren.

Gemma Skinner is believed to be Britain’s youngest grandmother after her 17-year-old daughter gave birth last weekend, and she is thrilled.

At first glance, anyone who saw Gemma with one-week-old baby Larosa Mae guessed that she was the mother.

“I explained she was my granddaughter and they were quite surprised.”

Gemma Skinner was just 16 when she became a mother to Maizie, who later became a parent at 17 last Sunday.

“Everyone thought (Larosa Mae) was Maizie’s little sister, so we had to keep explaining that she was actually his daughter,” added Gemma Skinner.

Gemma Skinner has two other daughters, Gracie (10) and Bella (4), who are now aunts.

But she says that when Maizie became pregnant, “My first reaction was to worry because it wasn’t easy knowing I was pregnant when I was so young.”

“But I wouldn’t change anything for the world and I love our little family. Maizie is a natural mother and I’m so proud of her.”

Larosa Mae’s head came out three minutes before the rest of her body, but she ended up being a successful birth, weighing in at 8 pounds 4 oz.

Gemma Skinner, from Amersham in Buckinghamshire, said her daughters loved being aunts, but her own mother, Lorraine, 54, wasn’t ready to be a great-grandmother.

Maizie who is the wife of Jack Weir (19 years) said, Gemma Skinner always gave support during her pregnancy.

Gemma Skinner joins a small number of women who are already grandmothers in their early 30s.

In June, Jenni Medlam of Hull also became a grandmother at 33 when her daughter Charmaine, 16, gave birth to Isla-May.

The median age for first-time mothers in the UK is 29, and the median age for grandparents with their first-born grandchild is 63.
