Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) won the 55th edition of Tirreno-Adriatico. The 8th and final stage, a 10.1 km time trial, was won by the Italian Filippo Ganna (Ineos).
Yates, who grabbed the blue leader’s jersey after Stage 5, held off the shock in the solo effort. Third overall on Sunday evening, Geraint Thomas only took 22 seconds back from him on Monday. The Welshman nevertheless moved from 3rd to 2nd overall, 17 ” behind Yates and 12 ” ahead of Pole Rafal Majka.
Winner of the Vuelta in 2018, Simon Yates (28) is the first Briton to win in the event. Adam’s twin brother succeeds the winner of the Course des deux mers from Slovenian Primoz Roglic, current leader of the Tour de France.
Kilian Frankiny best Swiss
Valais climber Kilian Frankiny (Groupama-FDJ), 71st overall, is the best Swiss in a general classification, taking 27th place at 12’33 ” from Simon Yates. Roller Silvan Dillier could not do better than 61st place in the time trial, where he conceded 1’21 ” to Filippo Ganna.
