When a woman has her menstrual period, the uterus contracts to help expel its lining.

Hormone-like substances (prostaglandins) that trigger uterine muscle contractions causing pain and inflammation.

High levels of prostaglandins cause menstrual cramps that are worse. Pain may decrease with age and often gets better after childbirth.

If menstrual cramps are interfering with activities, these home remedies can help relieve pain. Here are the tips as reported by the Mayo Clinic;

1. Drink plenty of water

Drinking enough water can help relieve bloating, which can worsen symptoms. Health experts recommend drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water per day, especially during menstruation.

Do not drink alcohol during menstruation as it can increase dehydration. Some women may experience diarrhea or vomiting during menstrual cramps. Drinking lots of water can help replace lost fluids.

2. Hot water bottle therapy

Hot water bottle therapy is a tried and tested method of relieving menstrual cramps. After all, it’s easy and doesn’t have any side effects.

Research has shown that hot water treatment is just as effective as NSAIDs and aspirin for menstrual cramp pain.

3. Change your diet

In one study, researchers found that women experienced fewer menstrual cramps when they followed a low-fat vegetarian diet.

Consuming 3-4 servings of dairy products has also been linked to reduced menstrual pain. Researchers suggest that calcium and vitamin D intake may have helped relieve pain

Magnesium deficiency, which is linked to anxiety and stress, can also worsen menstrual cramps. So, consuming foods that are rich in these nutrients can help prevent those annoying monthly pains.

Avoid fatty, sweet, or salty foods while menstruating. Instead eat anti-inflammatory foods like cherries, blueberries, pumpkin, tomatoes, and peppers to relieve menstrual cramps.

4. Eating ginger

Ginger is a drug-free alternative to relieve menstrual pain. Eating ginger has been shown to be effective in reducing pain.

Some research says the root may be as effective as common painkillers. Can be boiled and then made into a drink.
