liviosAugust is all about enjoying your garden. You can finally harvest fruits and vegetables from your vegetable garden and invite friends over for cozy barbecues – in dry weather anyway. Still, you’ll have to use your green finger every now and then. Built by Livios asked expert Bart Verelst what garden work awaits you in August.
No need to cut…
“As far as the lawn is concerned, you don’t need to make any extraordinary efforts,” says Verelst. “Don’t cut the grass too short, it can grow a little longer. This makes the lawn more resistant to the sun and the heat, if they come this month.”
After the extreme drought in June: with these tips you can prevent and restore a dry lawn.
… with the exception of the flower meadow
Do you have a flower meadow in your garden? Then you have to start. “When the flowers are fully bloomed, you have to bring in the mower,” says Verelst. “Mow the flower meadow and leave the cuttings, that the seeds may find a place for next year.”
Harvest time
August is the harvest month par excellence. Everything in your garden can be harvested, including the first fruits. “Usually, apples and pears can be harvested in August these days, especially when it was hot and there were many hours of sunshine. The official harvest day of the conference pear fell on August 22 this year.”
“I recommend picking your fruit trees in early August,” Verelst adds. “Small apples and pears that will not reach maturity are best removed to stimulate the growth of other fruits.”
“With tomatoes, you can very strongly remove the leaves. This way they can extra color quickly and you also arm the tomato plant against the tomato epidemic. This epidemic is a fungus that is attached to the leaves,” Verelst adds as a advice
“August is also the ideal month to mow your lawn. This way, the plants can still produce new leaves before winter sets in,” says Verelst.
You can also harvest onions and garlic if planted at the right time. The same goes for potatoes. Moreover, it is time to harvest the last beans. “Plants that have reached the end of production, like pea bushes for example, can be removed. This way you are already creating space in your vegetable garden for new vegetables.”
The vegetable garden
You can replenish your vegetable garden in August. “Lettuce, lamb’s lettuce and parsley only need a few weeks of growing time before you can harvest them,” says Verelst. Anyone who still wants to eat salad at home in September knows what to do.

Dividing and propagating plants
Want to rejuvenate plants in your garden? Then August is a positive month to do so. “You can certainly propagate plants in August, but make sure you water the plants a lot.”
Cutting is not yet necessary
Pruning is not really necessary in August. “It may already be possible, but it is better to wait a little longer,” says Verelst. “In August there are still many hours of light, which means that the plants can sprout again quickly.”
There are also little or no weeds to remove. What you should do is cut flowers would change color. “The faded flowers are best removed. This way the plant can use all its energy to make new flower buds.

Don’t fertilize either
So it is very quiet in the garden. “You don’t need to fertilize either,” says Verelst. “In August there is a great photosynthesis, which puts manure in second place.”
In short, you can store the mower, secateurs and rakes in August. This month is all about enjoying your garden. And you can literally reap the fruits of all your hard work over the past few months.
