The medal, the nation’s highest civilian honor, will be awarded on March 23rd. Sorenstam and the player will join Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Charlie Sifford and Tiger Woods as the only golfers to receive honors.

The medal of liberty is awarded by the president to citizens who make “a particularly meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, or to peace in the world, or to significant or public cultural or public initiatives.”

Sorenstam helped raise the profile of women’s golf during her illustrious 15-year career, gaining 89 victories worldwide, including 10 major championships and awards including the Associated Press Women’s Athlete of the Year Associated Press and Athlete Golf Writers Association of America Women’s Year.

The player has won 165 professional tournaments and is one of only five male players to earn a career title. His Player Foundation and Gary Player Invitational raise funds for disadvantaged children around the world.

Trump presented the Medal of Freedom to numerous athletes, including Woods, Roger Staubach and Alan Page of the NFL Families and Babe Ruth, the late New York Yankees.
