Unhealthy food an epidemic that deserves the same approach as corona? Eat unprocessed products from Dutch agriculture and horticulture: it won’t make you fat and sick | opinion

According to Rob Gonera we eat way too unhealthy and there would be a minister of nutrition should come . Pig farmer Sabine Grobbink states that her pigs eat healthier than many people. She therefore advises everyone to eat unprocessed products from Dutch agriculture and horticulture.

‘Minister of nutrition is desperately needed’, was the headline of internist / endocrinologist Rob Gonera, in this place last Saturday. The Dutch eat unreliable food, he writes, and as a result get obesity, high blood pressure, psychological complaints and so on.

According to him, unhealthy food is an epidemic that deserves the same approach as corona. But it might be a good idea to take a look at our pigs first.

Gleam in their pigskin

As a pig farmer, I pay close attention to the nutrition and health of our pigs. After all, good nutrition is the basis of a healthy pig, just like in humans. I get happy when my pigs eat well, shine in their pigskins and run through the pens at play.

Our pigs are served food that is completely tailored to their needs. That means that, unlike what people eat, their food does not contain a great excess of protein, sugar, and salt.

If pigs eat too many wrong things, it is bad for their health, just as with humans. If they eat too little, that is not good either. Although pigs are generally omnivores, having a sensitive nose that smells extremely good allows them to be selective about what they eat.

A pinch of salt for taste

This is something that is taken into account in the composition of the menu. For example, a pinch of salt is added to the food for adult animals for flavor. Piglets receive a small spoonful of sugar in the feed. As a result, it tastes extra delicious, so that pigs and piglets like to eat it.

Salt and sugar in moderation. My company’s dietitian makes sure that pigs get all the nutrients they need in the right degree: fiber for good intestinal function, starch and a little sugar for energy, a combination of good fats (linoleic acid) and all vitamins.

Everything is tailored to the specific needs of the animals, which change regularly. For example, the feed has its own composition for each age of the piglets. The sows also have their own diet for each part of the cycle, if they are pregnant, give birth, suckle piglets or need to recover after the farrowing period. In this way they receive exactly what they need at a certain point in their life.

A dietician visits every month

This sophisticated way of feeding is closely monitored. Every month our dietitian visits the company to examine the animals and to discuss the composition of the diets. I weigh a lot of sows to see if they keep their weight and are not too heavy or too light. The right condition is good for the animal, and for the farmer.

The chunks that our sows eat chunks consist of 80 percent residual flows from the food industry. Think of wheat fibers that are left over from the grain industry and are not used for baking bread, peels from the potato industry and brewer’s grains from beer breweries.

Checked in the laboratory

All products entering the pig feed are first thoroughly checked in the laboratory. As a result, we know exactly what nutrients it contains, but also that the feed is free of substances that do not belong in it.

The rules for animal feed raw materials are extremely strict. Dutch pork therefore meets the highest requirements and contains no antibiotics.

Our pigs, I can safely say, eat healthier than the people Gonera writes about in his opinion piece. I therefore advise everyone to eat unprocessed products from Dutch agriculture and horticulture. They are reliable, safe and healthy. And that does not make you fat and sick.
