US magazine did the math: Messi is the second football billionaire

Lionel Messi did not win a title last season, he is in a lot of trouble with his club, but financially things are going very well for the Argentine: No footballer earns more, the large amount of money enables him to become a member of a highly exclusive club.

Soccer star Lionel Messi reportedly made it into the exclusive club of athletes billionaires. As the highest paid football player in the world, the Argentine striker of FC Barcelona has now amassed more than a billion dollars (840 million euros), reported the US magazine “Forbes”. Messi earns $ 126 million this year alone – $ 92 million for the 2020/21 season at FC Barcelona and $ 34 million through sponsorship deals and the like.

According to Forbes, Messi is the fourth athlete in the billionaires’ club. Before him, the US golfer Tiger Woods, the former US boxer Floyd Mayweather and Messi’s soccer rival, the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, amassed such incredible wealth. Basketball legend Michael Jordan also made it into a billionaire – but only after his active career as an athlete through a mega-deal with sports equipment supplier Nike and the purchase of the NBA team Charlotte Hornets.

Messi had recently caused a stir because he wanted to leave Barcelona after 20 years – but the club insisted on keeping the contract and the 33-year-old gave in. On the “Forbes” footballer rankings, Cristiano Ronaldo of Juventus Turin with 117 million dollars in annual income, the Brazilian Neymar with 96 million dollars and the French Kylian Mbappé with 42 million dollars (both Paris St. Germain) place behind Messi.

According to “Forbes”, the ten best-earning footballers in the world have raked in around 570 million euros this year. That is eleven percent more than in the previous season.
