The connection between vitamin D and cancer has been researched for many years. Epidemiological studies, for example, have shown that people who live close to the equator are less likely to develop certain types of cancer and also die less often from cancer. The cause was suspected to be the higher solar radiation at the equator and therefore also a better vitamin D supply (vitamin D is formed in the skin under the action of UV radiation).
Vitamin D lowers the risk of dying from cancer
Laboratory studies with cancer cells or with mice had also shown that vitamin D could slow down cancer growth. However, randomized clinical trials with humans did not produce clear results. It was found that people with a higher vitamin D level had a lower risk of cancer (e.g. in connection with breast cancer), a 2019 study also showed that Cancer patients lived longerif they were given vitamin D long-term, but whether taking vitamin D could influence the risk of cancer was unclear.
The placebo-controlled vitamin D and omega-3 study (VITAL), which was completed in 2018, even showed that taking vitamin D could not reduce the risk of developing cancer. However, the doses used in this and many other vitamin D studies are always low and are not set in relation to the individual actual value, which of course automatically leads to less good results.
Vitamin D reduces the risk of a severe course of cancer by up to 38 percent
Researchers from the Bostoner Brigham and Women’s Hospital carried out a further analysis of the VITAL study. They focused on the relationship between taking a vitamin D supplement and the risk of developing metastatic or fatal cancer.
The VITAL study was carried out over a period of more than 5 years to check the effects of dietary supplements containing vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. Participants were men (over 50 years of age) and women (over 55 years of age) who had no cancer diagnosis at the start of the study and who were taking 2000 IU of vitamin D daily.
In JAMA Network Open summarized the study author, doctor and epidemiologist Dr. Paulette Chandler, put together the results that vitamin D reduced the risk of suffering from advanced cancer by as much as 17 percent. If this number was only checked in people of normal weight (since being overweight alone increases the risk of cancer drastically), it rose to 38 percent (1).
Obesity inhibits the positive effects of vitamin D.
In overweight people, vitamin D does not seem to be able to reduce the risk of cancer as well as in people of normal weight. It is believed that it is the chronic inflammatory processes in overweight people that contribute to the limited effectiveness of vitamin D.
