San Francisco: The Wikimedia Foundation is preparing to launch a paid service for technology giants. The foundation is reportedly set to launch a service called Wikimedia Enterprise later this year. The move could affect companies such as Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple. The platforms and virtual assistants of these companies rely on the knowledge provided by Wikipedia.
Lane Becker, the foundation’s senior director, said that commercial users are now recognizing themselves as users of their service. He added that the ‘Enterprise’ project is being developed with a small team. Details of how Wikimedia Enterprise will work are being prepared. Wikimedia Enterprise is similar to the premium version of Wikipedia’s API. The Wikimedia Enterprise team says it is balancing its commercial realities with providing free knowledge.
