Jānis Ābele was awarded as the best feature film director for the film “Jelgava ’94”.
Kristīne Nevarauska won “Kristaps the Great” as the best actress for her portrayal in “Nothing Will Stop Us”, Jēkabs Reinis won the Best Actor award for her work in the series “Red Forest”, and Dāvids Ogrodņiks was awarded as the best actor for her work in the film “Oleg”.
The award for Best Supporting Actress was won by Ieva Puķe for the film “Jelgava ’94”, and the main character of this film, Bruno Bitenieks, received special jury recognition for his promising portrayal in the film together with an excellent ensemble of professional actors.
“The Great Kristaps” was awarded to Vitalijs Mansks’ work “Putin’s Witnesses” as the best feature-length documentary, the special jury’s recognition for a convincing artistic vision in documentary was given to “Spoon” and director Laila Pakalniņa, and the special jury’s recognition for the continuation of Latvian documentary 2018 “.
“Rīgas ceriņi” and director Lizete Upīte received the award as the best short film, as well as the best animation – “Projai” and director Gints Zilbalodis, moreover, when awarding the award, the jury especially highlighted the film’s “unique visual and audio fantasy world created by the author alone” .
The best debut film was “Choir. Conductor. While” and director Emīls Alps, as the best screenwriters – Alise Zariņa and Marta Elīna Martinsone for the work “Next”, as the best artist – Rūdolfs Baltiņš (1906), as the best costume designer – Aija Strazdiņa (Jelgava ’94), but as the best make-up artist – Maija Gundare (Jelgava ’94).
Kaspars Goba with the film “Inga dzird” was recognized as the best documentary director this year, Valdis Eglītis (Sixth Day) as the best documentary cinematographer, Edmunds Jansons (Jēkabs, Mimmi and the Talking Dogs) as the best animation director, and the best animation artist – Ilze Vītoliņa (The sun was driving in the sky).
This year’s Rihards Zaļupe won the Best Composer Award for his work in the film “1906”, Anrijs Krenbergs and Saulius Urbanavičs (Spoon) received the award for best sound directors, Armands Začs (Spy, who is my father) as the best editing director, but as the best TV film or series – “Red Forest”, created by directors Normunds Pucis and Armands Zvirbulis.
The award for lifetime contribution to film art was reportedly given to director Varim Brasl this year.
This year, the film “1906” by director Gats Schmidt was nominated for the “Kristaps the Great” award in the most – 15 – nominations.
Nominated films and film professionals were judged by an international jury: Emmy Award winner, American-based Latvian film composer Lolita Ritmane, professor of prestigious New York Film School “Tisch”, film director and screenwriter Boris Frumins, film and TV screenwriter from Canada Larissa Gūtman documentary film master, last year’s “Big Kristaps” laureate, documentary “Time Bridges” documentary director Audrjus Stonis, last year’s “Big Kistapa” laureate for best directing of the film “Father. Night”, film theorist and director Dāvis Sīmanis, film scientist, FIPRCI Latvian branch board member Zane Balčus, “Big Kristaps” laureate, film director and producer Arvīds Krievs.
The cinema award “Kristaps the Great” is the most important event in the Latvian film industry, which gives an opportunity to see and professionally evaluate the latest Latvian films, as well as to honor the traditions of Latvian cinema.
