Latvian musician Raum, legally known as Reinis Straume, released his second single “Purvs” from his upcoming second studio album. The track is darker than the artist's previous work, focusing on real-world tragedies rather than standard pop-rock themes.
New Single Explores Mental Health Realities
While the sonic structure retains the bouncy pop-rock and college rock style of his previous work, the message behind “Purvs” is considerably more serious and heavy. Raum explained that the idea for the song emerged after receiving the difficult news that an acquaintance had passed away.
“The idea for the song arose after the heavy news that an acquaintance of mine had taken their own life. It wasn’t a family member or a close person. Just someone whose life took place somewhere in the periphery and who seemingly had been given a lot,” Raum stated.
The musician added that the situation brought back memories of similar past cases and forced him to reflect on how slowly a person can slip into such a state without anyone noticing until it is too late. The lyrics capture the moment of realization when an individual understands they need help to climb out. Raum’s stated hope is that the song will help someone feel heard and recognize their own emotional condition or that of a loved one.
Raum Produces Darker Sound for Second Studio Album
The track follows his previous single “Garas naktis, garas dienas,” with both songs mapping out the stylistic framework of Raum’s second studio album. The upcoming record will be both textually and musically darker than his debut album, “dns,” which was released in August 2025.
The production process for this project is also more personal than his previous work. Raum served as the producer or co-producer for every track on the album, while Kristofers Heriss handled the final audio mixing and mastering.
Raum launched his solo music career five years ago under the international record label Warner Music, releasing his debut album “dns” in August 2025.
