TV4 Profil Accused of 31 Cases of Sex Purchase
For nearly two weeks, it has been known that a highly recognizable TV profile working for TV4, Sweden’s largest commercial TV channel, has been indicted for 31 cases of sex purchase.
According to the indictment, the man allegedly bought sex at 17 different massage parlors across various cities in Sweden. These incidents were initially discovered as part of another case.
Concerns of Escape
The man has been indicted since early December, but on Thursday, Swedish daily Expressen reported that the man has not been available since then. This has led Swedish police to apply for his detention, citing fears that he might flee.
A thorough investigation by Swedish police has revealed text messages exchanged between the man and the massage parlors, including one where he writes, "I want to fuck now" and another where he states, "I’m getting horny." In addition, his Swish payment history shows numerous transactions to the salons. Swish is Sweden’s version of Vipps.
Widespread Impact
This high-profile case has sent shockwaves through the Swedish media industry. The man was a familiar face in a popular entertainment program for many years. Most of the alleged sex purchases took place in 2023, with two incidents traced back to January 2024.
The Swedish prostitution law states that purchasing sexual services is prohibited, both in Sweden and abroad for Swedish citizens/residents. Offenses can result in fines or imprisonment of up to one year. Buying sex from a minor is penalized more severely, with fines or imprisonment of up to two years.
In Norway, similar laws apply. Sex purchase is illegal, and offenders face fines or imprisonment of up to one year. Buying sex from a minor under 18 is punishable by fines or imprisonment of up to two years. Organizations like PION and ROSA work to support sex workers and advocate for legal reforms.
Not a Planned Act
During a police raid at his residence in April, the man stated in interrogation that he did not deliberately intend to purchase sexual services. However, police investigations have revealed 31 out of the 32 indicted incidents.
"I am shocked," expressed a colleague of the man. "The person I have been in contact with and what has happened are so far apart that I can’t process it." The Swedish penal code punishes sex purchase with a fines or imprisonment of up to one year.
