Ukraine Refuses Gas Transit Contract Renewal, Russia Unfazed
In a significant development, Ukraine has declared that it will not extend its five-year gas transit contract with Russia, set to expire on 1 January 2025. The decision was met with indifference by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who stated that "Gazprom" would "survive" this development.
During his annual major press conference, Putin addressed the impending termination of the contract, remarking, "This contract won’t exist, it’s already clear. Well, that’s fine, we’ll cope, ‘Gazprom’ will deal with it."
Putin further noted that the Ukrainian government had chosen to disrupt gas supplies to its European allies. This move comes amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions and renewed efforts by Russia to bypass Ukrainian territory in its gas exports to Europe, including the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
With the current transit agreement set to expire, European nations heavily reliant on Russian gas imports, such as Germany, will be closely watching developments. The European Commission has already expressed its commitment to securing steady and affordable gas supplies, whatever the outcome of the transit contract.
