Protecting Seniors: RSV Vaccination Considerations for High-Risk Adults
Article:
In June this year, 62-year-old "God of Songs" Jacky Cheung cancelled three stadium concerts due to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. Once primarily associated with pediatric illness and death, RSV is now recognized as a common cause of respiratory diseases in adults.
RSV, which can circulate year-round, peaks in transmission during April and October. Adults’ hospitalization rates increase with age, with those aged 75 and above having the highest rates. Patients with pre-existing lung or heart conditions also face heightened risks. Alarmingly, RSV-related hospitalizations can be more severe than those caused by COVID-19.
Symptoms in adults typically manifest within 3-5 days after infection, including nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, cough, and shortness of breath. In some cases, severe complications like pneumonia, respiratory failure, and acute cardiac events may develop.
Currently, RSV vaccines are available domestically. High-risk adults, such as those with COPD, asthma, heart failure, CAD, liver/kidney diseases, diabetes, or seniors, should consult their doctors to discuss the feasibility of paying for an RSV vaccination.
