Man in His 30s Sentenced to Psychiatric Care for Murder of 75-Year-Old Woman

A man in his 30s has been sentenced to involuntary psychiatric care for the murder of 75-year-old Aina Sigrun Hynne. The incident occurred in Kirkenær, Grue, on January 26 of this year. In addition to the sentence, the man is ordered to pay damages totaling NOK 317,577 to Hynne’s family, according to a ruling by Romerike and Glåmdal District Court.

Hynne had transferred over NOK 200,000 to the man and had helped him for an extended period, but had attempted to end the contact, her family told the court. The court’s ruling stated that the man’s contact and activities towards Hynne appeared to be primarily for his own benefit, making it unreasonable for him to expect a significant reduction in his payment of damages.

The 30-year-old man suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, according to his attorney. He has been diagnosed with hallucinations and delusions, and lacks insight into his own violent risk, according to experts. Despite this, the man has expressed remorse and seen Hynne as a ‘grandmother figure.’

The court agreed unanimously on the sentence. At the time of writing, neither the defense nor the State’s Attorney has provided a comment on the ruling.

Psychiatric Care in Norway

Involuntary psychiatric care, as ordered by the court, means that the mental health services are obligated to take over responsibility for the person convicted. Conditions for this include that the perpetrator was irrational at the time of the act, that there is a recurrence risk, and that the reaction is necessary to protect society.

The court or prosecution has no influence on the type of treatment to be used. Their involvement is limited to matters regarding establishment, discontinuation, and extension of the reaction.

The Victim

Aina Sigrun Hynne, a 75-year-old woman, was fatally assaulted with a hammer in Kirkenær, Grue. She had transferred a significant sum of money to the man before her death.
