Former Baker Finds His Calling as Stedin Lineman, Enjoys Outdoors
A former bakery owner has found his calling in a new career, trading in the warmth of the oven for the great outdoors as a lineman for energy provider Stedin. Perry Ruilder, 44, swapped his apron for safety gear and now enjoys the varied challenges and fresh air his new role brings.

His search led him to Stedin’s lineman apprenticeship program. After completing the course and financing options, he began his new career. Now, Ruilder climbs towers, maintains power lines, and responds to outages. "It’s a complete change from bakery work, but I’m really enjoying it. It’s like a giant playground up there," he laughed.
The job has also improved Ruilder’s fitness. "I’m in much better shape now. Climbing those towers is a great workout!" he said.
Stedin’s apprenticeship program welcomes people from diverse backgrounds, offering them a chance to learn new skills and contribute to the energy sector. For Ruilder, it was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. "I’m so grateful for this chance. I’m learning every day, and it’s really exciting," he said.
As he continues his new career, Ruilder looks forward to the variety and challenges that each day brings. With his can-do attitude and passion for the outdoors, it’s clear that Perry Ruilder has found his perfect fit as a Stedin lineman.
