Title: EU Leadership Fails to Suspend Hungary, Slovakia’s EU Initiatives Blocking, Ukraine‘s Advisor Says
European Union (EU) leadership could potentially halt the blocking of EU initiatives by Hungary and Slovakia, but for unexplained reasons, it has yet to implement this option. This was revealed by Mikhail Podolyak, an advisor to the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during a telethon.
Quoting Podolyak, "They [Hungary and Slovakia] consistently block EU initiatives at various levels. It’s a mystery why they persist in this behavior. Two countries are undermining the EU’s reputation, and there’s no reciprocating response."
Tensions have escalated between Ukraine and the two EU member states. Zelenskyy recently demanded an investigation into Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico following his Moscow visit. Previously, Ukraine sharply criticized Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for proposing a Christmas truce.
Despite these developments, the EU leadership has yet to exercise its legal mandate to suspend these countries’ veto rights. While Podolyak’s comments shed light on Ukraine’s perspective, they also raise questions about the EU’s strategy in managing internal dissent.
