Police in Indonesia have confirmed that several of their own officers were involved in an alleged extortion incident at the Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) event, which gained international attention after 45 Malaysian nationals were reportedly targeted. The revelation comes as numerous police names and ranks were circulated on social media, leading to significant public outcry and scrutiny.

Widespread Involvement Across Police Hierarchy

In a candid admission, the Head of the Division for Profession and Security Affairs (Kadiv Propam) of the Indonesian National Police (Polri), Irjen Abdul Karim, acknowledged that several of the names circulating are indeed among those recently apprehended. "Yes, some names that are circulating are indeed among those currently in custody," he confirmed.

The implicated officers, numbering 18 in total, hail from various ranks and units within the police force, ranging from local police stations (polsek) and regencies (polres) to the provincial police department (polda). The officers’ involvement was reportedly not coordinated, with varying ranks and positions afflicted, including chiefs, detectives, inspectors, and unit members.

Senior Officers Implicated

Sources close to the investigation confirm that 12 of the officers are from the Directorate of Narcotics Crime Eradication (Ditresnarkoba) of the Metro Jaya Provincial Police Department (Polda Metro Jaya). Their ranks span from Assistant Commissioner of Police (AKBP) to Inspector of Police (Iptu).

The list includes high-ranking officials such as:

Despite the confirmation, Karim declined to provide further details about the individual officers’ roles or the extent of their involvement.

International Scrutiny

The incident has drawn significant international attention, with foreign media outlets covering the story and expressing dismay at the alleged actions of Indonesian police officers. The Malaysian government has also expressed concern and summoned the Indonesian ambassador to convey their disappointment.

Previously, Indonesian police reported that items worth nearly IDR 25 billion (approximately USD 1.7 million) were recovered as evidence from the incident. As the investigation continues, the Propam Division of Polri has scheduled an internal ethics hearing for the implicated officers in the coming week.
