Ukraine Under Heavy Strikes: Russia Launches Massive Attack on Kharkiv, Targeting Infrastructure
In a brazen move, Russia has unleashed a heavy barrage of attacks on Ukraine, with Kharkiv being the first city to face the brunt of the invader’s wrath. According to 24 Canal, citing Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov’s message, the attack began around 06:00, with enemy forces striking the city using ballistic missiles launched from the Belgorod region.
The mayor reported that Russia fired 12 rockets at Kharkiv, all of which were aimed at critical infrastructure, including heating plants, the Thermal Power Plant, and other energy facilities. The attack has left a significant part of Kharkiv without heat and electricity.
Ukrenego has introduced special power grids, and shortly, emergency shutdown schedules will be available on the regional energy provider’s website. In addition, the prosecutor’s office confirmed that six people were injured in the attack.
Earlier this morning, Kharkiv was subjected to further aggression when Russia launched several "Shahed" drones, damaging private homes in the city. The consequences of the drone strike on the Osnovyanenskyi district can be seen in the photos shared by Suspilne.
In the wake of the attacks, nearly 500,000 subscribers in Kharkiv and parts of the region remain without electricity. Moreover, around 520,000 subscribers are experiencing disruptions in their heat and water supply. Notably, heat is currently unavailable in 2,677 homes across the city.
In a separate development, President Zelensky divulged that Russia, in a deliberate move timed around Christmas, launched over 70 missiles and hundreds of drones against Ukraine.
