Estonia Braces for Potential Confrontation with Russia, Fear of Third World War Looms
In an ominous turn of events, Estonia is gearing up for a possible confrontation with Russia, with some officials fearing that this could spark a global conflict. The city of Narva, situated near the Russian border, has been identified as a potential flashpoint, according to Politico.
General Director of the Estonian Police and Border Guard, Ergo Belov, has stated that while Estonia does not seeks to instigate a third world war, persistent provocations could lead to one. "We will not start a third world war, but we see continuous attempts to provoke us into something with more serious consequences," he asserted.
Estonian authorities have been putting measures in place to enhance their security. A €157 million program aims to fortify the country’s defenses against Russia. This includes the development of a "drone wall" to prevent unauthorized unmanned aircraft from entering its airspace, and the hiring of an additional 1,000 security personnel. Meanwhile, leaders of Latvia, Estonia, and Finland—all NATO members—are expressing concern about the alliance’s ability to withstand Russian pressure without the active involvement of the United States. "We are not ready," acknowledged Edgars Rinkevics, Latvia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. "We cannot just hope that the United States will remain actively engaged in European affairs."
Adding to their worries, these countries are now questioning the assistance they can provide to Ukraine due to the current limitations of their defense industries, which are struggling to meet production demands.
