Power Cut in the Baltic: Finland Investigates Damaged Undersea Cable, Sabotage Not Ruled Out
Marking a significant disruption, a key undersea power cable in the Baltic Sea, connecting Finland and Estonia, has suffered a mysterious damage, resulting in a widespread power outage in Finland. Finnish authorities are currently investigating the incident, with sabotage among the hypotheses being explored.
The outage, which lasted several hours, affected approximately 800,000 customers in Finland, highlighting the critical role these undersea cables play in the country’s energy infrastructure. The cable, owned by Estlink, a joint venture between Finland’s Fingrid and Estonia’s Elering, was severely damaged, leading to an intense investigation into the cause.
Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) are jointly examining the incident, with the focus initially on potential technical faults. "We are investigating all possibilities, including sabotage," said a spokesperson for the Finnish police. "Given the strategic nature of these undersea cables, we must explore every avenue."
