Government’s Official Website Suffers Ciberattack on Christmas Night
In a worrying turn of events, the official government website, argentina.gob.ar, faced a major ciberattack on Christmas night, disrupting services and causing widespread concern. The Secretaría de Innovación, Ciencia y Tecnología confirmed that the attack was detected at 9:30 PM on December 25 and throughout the night, it caused significant disruptions on the website.
Visitors trying to access the website early on December 26 found that while they could enter the homepage, most sections remained inaccessible. It took several hours for services to be gradually restored. The incident left many government portals, including Mi Argentina, the Tarjeta Sube, DNI and passport services, and the online application for antecedents, temporarily unavailable.
The Secretaría de Innovación, Ciencia y Tecnología attributed the attack to the "deplorable state" of the electronic management systems, platforms, and applications left behind by previous governments. They also criticized the Congress for rejecting the DNU 656/2024, which would have provided significant funds for the Secretaría de Inteligencia de la República Argentina (SIDE), hindering necessary investments in digital infrastructure and security.
Marcelo Firtman, a renowned programmer, professor, journalist, and author, explained that the attack involved a "defacement" – a modification of the content of the website. The hackers managed to replace various sections of the website with political messages and multimedia content, including insults directed at Javier Milei and a video of the rapper "Homer El Mero Mero".
Independent experts advised users to avoid accessing the affected platforms for the time being to protect their personal data and credentials. They also emphasized the importance of updating software and using robust passwords to enhance online security.
The Secretaría de Innovación, Ciencia y Tecnología_response was swift and direct. They blamed previous governments for creating a favorable environment for ciberattacks and criticized the Congress for prioritizing political games over funding cybersecurity efforts. They emphasized the urgent need for investment in infrastructure and security to combat such incidents effectively.
This incident comes barely a month after the Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica (CNEA) suffered a ciberattack, which the government acknowledged several days later. That attack left the CNEA without its administrative network and triggered concern over the security of plans for the CAREM nuclear reactor.
