Revolutionizing Dengue Fever Prevention: Jember‘s SMA 3 Muhammadiyah Develops LarvaeCam App
Jember, Indonesia – In an innovative effort to curb the widespread occurrence of dengue fever (DF) in the Jember region, SMA 3 Muhammadiyah Jember has developed a groundbreaking application called LarvaeCam. This app aims to detect Potential Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus larvae, the mosquitoes responsible for transmitting dengue fever and malaria, with remarkable accuracy. By doing so, it assists health officials in preventing the spread of these diseases.
How LarvaeCam Works
Joice Amriah Lesmana, the app’s developer, explains its modus operandi. "We start by collecting samples of mosquito larvae found in residential areas, such as bathrooms or stagnant water sources. We then examine and verify the samples to confirm the presence of any dengue or malaria-causing mosquito larvae," she explains.
The process continues with fixing the larvae to maintain their morphological integrity. The larvae are then placed in a specific container and photographed under a camera with up to 200x magnification, which is integrated with the LarvaeCam app. The app then automatically identifies the larvae’s shape, providing results within 10-15 minutes with an impressive 99% accuracy.
Aiding Health Agencies Nationwide
This innovation is expected to assist Indonesia’s health ministries, particularly in regions lacking entomology experts, in mapping out mosquito larvae types before preventive actions are taken. Until now, house-to-house inspections by Jumantik (Mosquito Surveyors) only involved counting the number of mosquitoes in bathrooms using conventional methods.

In Jember, a district prone to dengue fever, LarvaeCam offers an opportune solution for early detection. It is hoped that this app will not only serve Jember but also other Indonesian regions in reducing dengue fever cases through early detection and prevention.
