Ukrainian Forces Deal Major Blow to North Korean Troops in Kursk, Causing Heavy Losses and Logistical Struggles
Ukrainian forces have inflicted heavy losses on North Korean troops stationed in Russia’s Kursk region, according to Ukrainian military intelligence (GUR), cited by Associated Press (AP) and Bloomberg (BT). The GUR reports that Ukrainian strikes near the settlement of Novoye Ivanovka have dealt significant damage to the North Korean units, leading to supply chain issues and even water shortages.
Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that around 3,000 North Korean servicemen have been killed or injured in the fighting in Kursk. This is the first official Ukrainian estimate of North Korean casualties since Russia deployed between 10,000 to 12,000 North Korean troops to support its ongoing war efforts, which have been ongoing for nearly three years.
In August, Ukrainian forces mounted an offensive in the Kursk area, launching devastating attacks on the Russian army and forcing Russia to redirect troops from Eastern Ukraine. While the Russian army managed to retake some territory in the region, it failed to fully dislodge the Ukrainian forces, as reported by AP.
The escalating conflict has put North Korea in a precarious position, with its troops facing substantial casualties and logistical challenges. As the war in Ukraine enters its 26th month, the involvement of North Korean troops has added another layer of complexity to the strategic landscape.
