A large fire broke out in an apartment building on the Aziëlaan in Alphen aan den Rijn on Tuesday afternoon, temporarily displacing residents and requiring a significant response from emergency services.
The cause of the fire in the meter cupboard of a flat is currently under investigation. The flames spread quickly, leading to the evacuation of approximately 25 apartments. Residents were temporarily accommodated in a nearby sports hall.
Many residents described their shock and disbelief as they watched the massive blaze from a safe distance. “I heard a loud bang, and then I saw a lot of smoke,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. Another resident reported, “I could see the flames and heard people shouting. It was quite scary.”
By the time fire crews arrived, the flames had engulfed much of the top floor. Firefighters worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control, with assistance from neighboring fire departments. The blaze was eventually extinguished several hours later.
The extent of the damage is still being assessed, but it is believed to be greater than initially expected. Repair and restoration work is expected to take an extended period.
Remarkably, no serious injuries were reported. Many residents have since been allowed to return to their homes, while some remain displaced due to the extensive damage.
The Alphen aan den Rijn fire department has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
