Title: U.S. Slaps Sanctions on Former Georgian Premier Ivanishvili: A Step Towards Democracy and Crisis Resolution
In a significant move towards fostering democracy and resolving political crises, the United States has imposed sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, the former Georgian Prime Minister and influential powerbroker in the country. Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Broka (JV) hailed this decision as a crucial step aligning with the Georgian people’s aspirations.
U.S. authorities placed Ivanishvili, who is currently not holding any official state post but is widely believed to control all levers of power from the shadows, under sanctions last Friday. The U.S. allegations highlight Ivanishvili’s attempts to dismantle democratic institutions at the behest of Russian interests.
Protests against the ruling party "Georgian Dream", which Ivanishvili founded, have been ongoing since late October. Demonstrations escalated after Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced on November 28 that Georgia would not pursue EU membership talks until 2028.
Broka previously announced that 13 more Georgian nationals would be added to Latvia’s list of unwanted persons in December, following a similar action in November. Latvia has not disclosed the names of those included in these "blacklists."
In late November, the Baltic States collectively agreed to impose national sanctions on those responsible for suppressing legal protests in Georgia. Subsequently, both Estonia and Lithuania imposed travel bans on 11 Georgian citizens, including Ivanishvili, for human rights violations. Latvia followed suit, refraining from disclosing the names of those under sanctions.
On December 15, Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Cahkna signed a decree imposing sanctions on 14 high-ranking Georgian officials and judges, including Prime Minister Garibashvili. On December 16, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis did the same, targeted 18 individuals, including Garibashvili.
The international community’s actions reflect growing concern over the Georgian government’s response to peaceful protests and commitment to democratic reforms. As the global spotlight intensifies on Georgia’s political development, the U.S. sanctions on Ivanishvili mark a notable advance in promoting democratic values and crisis resolution in the strategically important nation.
