Title: Bulgaria‘s Former Vice Premier Slams Prosecution’s ‘Political Play’ in Bojko Borisov Arrest
Former Vice Premier and Law Professor Daniel Völchev has weighed in on the delayed immunity removal process for former PM Boyko Borisov, suggesting that Bulgaria’s prosecution has repeatedly used legal proceedings for political gain.
"Prosecutors aren’t just playing politics here; this isn’t unique to Bulgaria. Similar trends can be seen in France and, more recently, the U.S.," Völchev told Bulgaria ON AIR in an interview. "Just look at the timing of charges against Donald Trump. It’s not a coincidence that investigations picked up as his presidential ambitions became clearer."
Völchev criticized the perceived hypocrisy in Bulgaria’s political landscape, where some factions appear protected while others face scrutiny. "The difference here is that we’re doing it more openly and controversially. Plus, there’s a double standard – some believe certain groups have the right to act this way, while others don’t."
Reflecting on the likelihood of an effective, anti-corruption government, Völchev quipped, "Every incoming government finds a catchy slogan. Some focus on European integration, others on Euro-Atlantic ties. But corruption remains a persistent issue. Ironically, some of these negotiators have recently accused each other of being among the world’s most corrupt."
As political parties continue discussing the new cabinet’s composition, Bulgaria awaits a stable government that can effectively tackle longstanding corruption challenges.
