Italian Government Websites, Airports Hit by Cyberattack Claimed by Pro-Russian Group
In a growing string of cyber incidents, Italy’s government and airport websites were targeted in a significant cyberattack over the weekend. The responsible party has been identified as the pro-Russian hacker group Noname057(16).
The attack, which disrupted several government sites temporarily, comes amid heightened concerns about Russia‘s potential cyber capabilities. The Italian Cybersecurity Agency confirmed the incident, with a representative stating that the agency provided swift assistance to affected institutions and minimized the impact within two hours.
The disruptive DDoS attack comes on the heels of similar incidents targeting critical infrastructure in Europe. Recently, Romania’s largest energy company, Electrica, reported a cyberattack, while the UK government warned of potential Russian-led cyber warfare.
The pro-Russian hacker group claimed responsibility, stating that the attack was a "deserved cyber response" for Italy’s perceived "rusophobia." Italian authorities hinted that the attack was likely carried out by a pro-Russian group, given its nature and the group’s previous activities.
