In a tragic incident, Dierenpark Amersfoort has lost one of its young Asian elephants. Yindi, a four-year-old calf, passed away after getting her hind leg stuck between a wall of wooden logs during outdoor play. The zoo announced the sad news on its Instagram account.
Efforts to free Yindi safely involved sedating her, but unfortunately, the young elephant did not regain consciousness. Like humans, elephants mourn the loss of their loved ones. Yindi’s body was moved to the indoor enclosure, allowing her fellow elephants, including her mother Kina, to pay their last respects.
Yindi had previously made headlines earlier this year when a 75 cm long branch became lodged in her trunk, making it difficult for her to eat and drink. With the help of a specially designed tool created by TU-Delft, zoo keepers successfully removed the branch.
Sadly, Yindi is not the only elephant to have passed away in Dutch zoos recently. In November, Ouwehands Dierenpark Rhenen lost its four-year-old elephant Bumi to elephant herpes, a dangerous virus for young elephants. DierenPark Amersfoort itself lost two young elephants to the same disease in 2020 and 2023.
The zoo now houses two Asian elephants, Kina, Yindi’s mother, and Indra, the matriarch of the herd.
