Cold Snap Expected to Start January in Ukraine

Brace yourself, Ukraine! The new year is set to begin with a significant cold snap, according to the latest meteorological predictions. This shift marks a stark contrast to the unseasonably warm and wet weather that has been prevalent in recent weeks.

A Blustery January

January is often referred to as the ‘crown of winter’ in Ukraine, a time when the country typically experiences its lowest average monthly temperatures and various winter weather phenomena, such as strong gusts of wind. While instances of extreme cold starting from the north have become less frequent in recent years due to climate change, this January appears to be different.

Beginning in early January, a frontal system is forecast to bring a surge of cold air from the north, driven by a potent cyclonic system in the northern Atlantic. This cold snap is expected to cover northwest Europe and parts of Ukraine during the first week of the new year.

Warm Air to Give Way to Cold

In Ukraine, the switch from abnormally warm and wet conditions to bitter cold and wind will happen rapidly. Western regions will feel the pinch the most, with temperatures plummeting by up to 13°C over just a couple of days. In contrast, southern and eastern regions will experience a more gradual cool-down.

Check out the map below, which illustrates the anticipated temperature anomalies across Europe during the first week of January. The blue areas represent regions expected to be colder than usual, while the red and orange areas forecast warmer-than-average temperatures.

Mid-Month Chill

From January 4th to 6th, the cold air will shift eastward, blanketing central Europe and parts of Ukraine. In Ukraine, the most severe frosts will be felt in the west and southwest, while other regions will experience temperatures in line with historical averages.

Late January Thaw

Come late January, the weather pattern will shift once more, with warmer, more humid air from the North Atlantic peninsula set to sweep into Europe. By the end of the month, temperatures across Ukraine are expected to return close to, or even slightly above, average for this time of year.

Throughout the month, periods of moderate frost, occasionally dipping to -15°C to -20°C, are expected in many parts of the country, except for the southern regions and Crimea.

Heavy Rains and Strong Winds

January is forecast to be wetter than usual in most of Ukraine, with an increased likelihood of snow, slush, and occasionally, rain. The first week of the new year is expected to be particularly windy, with the strongest gusts in western, northern, and eastern regions.

Previously, the Ukrainian ‘Telegraph’ reported that weather forecasts for New Year’s would see a white winter in only certain regions of the country.
