Tallak Risdal Momrak was among the many passengers impacted when the runway at Torp closed down. He and his seven friends were heading to Gdansk, Poland, for a bachelor party when they received news of their flight cancellation.
"We’ve driven for four hours to get here, so we’re hoping to find a solution, but we’re not sure yet," Momrak told NRK.
The closure comes after a KLM plane made an emergency landing on the runway Saturday evening, blocking it. Tine Kleive-Mathisen, communications chief at Torp Sandefjord Airport, confirmed this to NRK.
Kleive-Mathisen hopes to move the KLM plane by the afternoon, reopening the runway for normal traffic at 6 PM Norwegian time. Around 5,000 passengers will be affected until the plane can be moved.
Viktoria Mercher, another passenger whose flight to Gdansk was canceled, expressed her stress. "I’m starting a new job tomorrow, so this is quite inconvenient. We’re still waiting for news from the airline on whether we’ll get a new flight today," she said.
The airport anticipates a hectic day due to the holiday season. Some passengers may need to fly from or to Gardermoen instead. Passengers affected are advised to closely monitor SMS updates from their airlines for further instructions.
Kleive-Mathisen reassured that the airport is well-prepared to handle such situations, despite the rarity of emergency landings like Saturday’s. She emphasized safety protocols and procedures in place for such events.
The emergency landing on Saturday evening resulted in no injuries to the 182 passengers on board. However, the plane slid off the runway and currently stands on the grass beside it.
