Batten Down the Hatches: Stormy New Year’s and a Promising Chill for 2025
As we bid farewell to 2024, brace yourselves for a windy and wet welcome to 2025. Following a year marked by record-breaking warmth, winter is finally set to make an appearance, bringing with it the promise of snow. This is the forecast from Weerplaza meteorologist Floris Lafeber, but before we digging out our woolen mittens, a stormy New Year’s eve and a tumultuous start to the new year await.
The final days of 2024 are set to be anything but tranquil. New Year’s Day will start cloudy with temperatures hovering around 8°C. However, the real drama will unfold during the turn of the year, with winds expected to reach up to 75 km/h in Brabant, as Lafeber warns. "The wind will really pick up, especially during the New Year’s celebrations," he says, advising firework enthusiasts to be cautious, as embers from firecrackers can quickly spread in such windy conditions.
The first days of 2025 will also be marked by strong winds. The night from January 1st to 2nd promises to be particularly windy, with gusts potentially reaching 100 km/h on the western side of Brabant. Despite the wintery weather, temperatures will remain mild until Friday, with averages around 8°C.
But hold onto your hats, snow lovers! The chances of snowball fights and snowman-building are escalating. According to Lafeber, "While ‘proper winter’ is a broad term, it will get significantly colder, and there’s a chance of wintery precipitation." So, while it’s not time to break out the skates just yet, there’s a glimmer of hope for wintry fun ahead.
Before you start planning your snow activities, be prepared for a stormy start to 2025. Keep an eye out for harsh winds and rain during New Year’s eve, as winter’s chill won’t begin until later in the week.
