Ukrainian Capital Kicks Off New Year with Drone Attack
In an unnerving start to 2023, the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv found itself under attack by Russian drones, with multiple explosions and fires reported across the city. The incidents were confirmed by both RIA Novosti and the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, according to statements made on their Telegram channels.
Klitschko stated, "Fragments from a drone have fallen on a non-residential building in the Sviatoshynsky district. A fire has broken out," adding that the blast has damaged cars and garages in the area. The Kyiv City Military Administration later specified that the drone debris struck a non-residential building, causing a localized fire and damaging vehicles and garages.
In the aftermath, Klitschko reported that windows in a residential building near the affected garages were shattered, and the tram line was partially damaged. Later, he added that a fire had broken out on the roof and in an apartment of the residential building.
The incident underscores the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with attacks on civilian areas increasing in frequency and intensity despite global outcry. As the war enters its second year, the safety and security of Ukrainian citizens remain a persistent concern.
