Mexico Rocks The New Year with A Series of Earthquakes: A Recap
As New Year’s Day dawned in Mexico, the country woke up to a series of earthquakes, a jarring welcome to 2024. The first of these temblors was recorded by the SecretarÃa de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana (SSPC) as a magnitude 4.1, striking just after midnight in the western state of Colima.
This was not an isolated incident. Throughout January 1, minor earthquakes were reported across the country,including a magnitude 3.4 in Guerrero and a magnitude 3.0 in Jalisco, among others. The National Seismological Service (SSN) confirmed that these earthquakes were part of the same seismic sequence.
Although no significant damage was reported and there were no immediate threats to life or property, these earthquakes serve as a reminder of Mexico’s vulnerability to seismic activity. The country lies on the "Ring of Fire," a vast area where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur due to the large number of tectonic plates in the region.
Despite the unsettling start, Mexicans remained resilient and prepared, thanks in part to regular earthquake drills held nationwide. As authorities continue to monitor the seismic activity, they remind the public to stay informed and follow safety protocols in case of a major earthquake.
