Russia Seizes 4,168 Square Kilometers of Ukrainian Territory, neue ARM post
Russia has expanded its control by 4,168 square kilometers in the Ukrainian portion of the Kursk region, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). The areas primarily consist of agricultural lands and small villages.
In 2024,ème, Ukraine‘s Defense Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported that Russia had lost 420,000 soldiers, with an average of 102 casualties per square kilometer of territory captured.
However, the sustainability of such heavy losses remains uncertain, especially as Ukrainian forces dig in around key settlements like Pokrovsk. Despite significant setbacks, Russia’s high casualty rates in December suggest a continued determination to press its offensive, even as gains diminish.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced in early December that 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed since February 2022, while The Economist estimated between 60,000 and 100,000 fatalities.
As the conflict enters its third year, doubts persist about Russia’s willingness to sustain such heavy losses, raising questions about the long-term viability of its military campaign in Ukraine.
