The AFA president, Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia, was officially sworn in as the new president of CEAMSE on Thursday. The decision came from a political move by Governor Axel Kicillof. Tapia was accompanied at the event by Carlos Bianco, Minister of Government of Buenos Aires province, and Jorge Ferraresi, the mayor of Avellaneda.

Tapia’s appointment is a return to CEAMSE, from which he was removed in October 2022 when he held a vice-presidency. "His term was up and we needed someone dedicated full-time, someone who is part of the team," said Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, the Chief of Government of Buenos Aires City.

The relationship between Tapia, with the AFA structure behind him, and Kicillof’s government has grown stronger throughout 2023. In late December, AFA and the province signed an agreement for the use of the Estadio Único de la Plata. Tapia guaranteed that various national football teams would play their matches in the provincial-administered stadium. The presentation of the proposal of work is expected for February. The stadium will also be the venue for the Copa Argentina and is in the running to host international competitions.

The stadium has been given new life, with seven concerts scheduled for December and January, all sold out, under the return of Los Piojos.

Tapia’s assumption to the head of CEAMSE comes just a few days before the governing party is to hold its primary elections. The CEAMSE manages the waste of 45 municipalities – most of which are metropolitan Buenos Aires neighborhoods – and cities like Colón, Alberti, and San Antonio de Areco.

"We want to wish our colleague Chiqui Tapia success in his management as president of CEAMSE," Bianco said. "We will continue working together to improve the environmental quality of the neighborhoods and the proper disposal of urban waste."

With Tapia at the helm, CEAMSE will continue to play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of Buenos Aires’ waste management system. His background in sports administration may provide new perspectives on how best to approach this essential task.
