British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has responded to Elon Musk‘s recent criticism, joining the growing chorus of international leaders expressing concern over the tech billionaire’s influence. In a statement, Starmer suggested that Musk’s attacks were self-serving and showed little regard for the victims of the abuses he claimed to be targeting.
Starmer’s remarks come amid renewed scrutiny of his leadership during his tenure as Director of Public Prosecutions from 2008 to 2013, during which time it was revealed that nearly 1,400 children under the age of 16 had been sexually exploited in the town of Rotherham between 1997 and 2013.
Across the English Channel, French President Emmanuel Macron also took aim at Musk, accusing him of meddling in elections, particularly in Germany, where Musk has thrown support behind the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Macron, speaking to French ambassadors on Monday, said that Musk’s involvement in political affairs was unprecedented and concerning.
Macron’s comments were echoed by a spokesperson for the German government, who downplayed Musk’s influence on the German elections, stating that "normal, reasonable people" held the majority and that Musk’s Twitter statements could not significantly impact a country of over 84 million people.
In Norway, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre also expressed concern over Musk’s influence, telling NRK, "I find it worrying that a man with enormous access to social media and significant financial resources can intervene so directly in domestic affairs of other countries. That’s not how it should be between democracies and allies."
Starmer, Macron, and Støre’s remarks are part of a broader trend of international leaders expressing discomfort with Musk’s increasing political activity and influence. As Musk’s presence on the world stage grows, so too does the scrutiny of his intentions and the potential consequences of his actions.
