Gunfight in Guanajuato: Eight Civilians Dead, Three Police Injured on Día de Reyes
In the early hours of Monday, January 6, Día de Reyes, a shootout between Mexican Federal and State Security forces escalated into a violent confrontation in the Guanajuato community of Buenavista, Yuriria. The gunfight left three police officers injured and eight presumed criminals dead, according to authorities.
The Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección (SSP) reported that the incident occurred during intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal groups and reducing violence in the state. The operation, part of the Coordinated Operative of the New Force Intelligence Anti-Crime (CONFIA), sought to disrupt the activities of gangs known for generating violence and chaos.

Three state police officers were injured in the firefight, receiving non-life-threatening wounds. Meanwhile, government forces claimed eight alleged aggressive involved died due to legitimate and proportional use of force, adhering to protocols and adherence to human rights.
Following the attack, narcoblockades were reported on the Jaral del Progreso highway. Retaliatory actions led to the burning of two passenger buses and a pickup truck on the Jaral del Progreso – Valle de Santiago highway.
