In a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has unveiled an ambitious electric vehicle (EV) project called Olinia. The project, aimed at providing a safe, efficient, and affordable mobility option for millions of Mexicans, was presented during a morning press conference on Monday, January 6, 2025.
Roberto Campusano Tripp, coordinator of the Olinia project, highlighted the benefits of electric vehicles over conventional internal combustion engine vehicles currently dominating the market. "Olinia will be Mexico’s first armorer of mini vehicles developed by Mexican engineering. Olinia will offer an urban mobility option that is secure, efficient, sustainable, and within reach of millions of Mexicans," he said.
The initial commercial models of Olinia will be priced between MXN 90,000 and MXN 150,000, addressing the current high cost of electric vehicles in the Mexican market.
At the press conference, Campusano showcased the characteristics of the first three models set to hit the market. While the slides displayed three concept vehicles, the final designs may differ. The models cater to specific urban mobility needs:
