Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has catalyzed international scrutiny on the United Kingdom’s long-buried child abuse scandal, criticizing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for allegedly ignoring the pleas of victims and their families for political gain.
Musk took to Twitter to express his disbelief at Starmer’s categorization of those seeking a fresh investigation into the matter as part of the "extreme right." He asserted that the real reason behind the resistance to a new probe was Starmer’s repeated disregard for the plight of hundreds of young girls and their parents in favor of securing political support.
"What an insane thing to say! The real reason is that it would show how Starmer repeatedly ignored the pleas of vast numbers of little girls and their parents, in order to secure political support. Starmer is utterly despicable," Musk tweeted.
Starmer has since criticized Musk’s messages as spreading "lies and disinformation." However, his role as the Director of Public Prosecutions between 2008 and 2013, during which many of the offenses occurred, has drawn sharply critical responses. Musk even went so far as to label him a "complicit in the rape of Britain."
The Growing Scandal
The abuse scandal came to light in 2014 when The Times revealed that 1400 children in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, had been abused, trafficked, or threatened with violence. In 2022, the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) expanded the scope, citing abuses in churches and schools across the country.
Investigations have pointed to a cover-up by local authorities and police, with some officials expressing concern that highlighting the ethnic origins of the perpetrators would be seen as racist or detrimental to community cohesion.
The issue resurfaced recently when the current Home Secretary, Jess Phillips, turned down a request from Oldham Council to examine the sexual exploitation of children in the town. Musk has since accused Phillips of being an "apologist for genocide by rape."
International Reactions
French President Emmanuel Macron, among other left-leaning world leaders, has denounced Musk for allegedly fueling a "new reactionary international" with his comments on the UK scandal and his endorsement of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of its February 23 general election.
Regardless of political affiliations, Musk’s intervention has shed light on a pressing and long-neglected issue, prompting calls for more stringent action against child exploitation networks worldwide. As the owner of the now-defunct Twitter (now X), Musk has already demonstrated his commitment to addressing such sensitive topics by tackling and removing relevant content on the platform.
