Frp Questions Norway‘s Ambitious 55% Climate Goal by 2030

In a surprising shift, the Norwegian Progress Party (Frp) has expressed skepticism towards Norway’s ambitious climate goal, set by the Paris Agreement, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030. Marius Arion Nilsen, Frp’s climate policy spokesperson, told Klassekampen that the 55% target is "completely unrealistic" and a form of "costly symbolic politics," a stance the party has taken repeatedly in Parliament.

"If we find ourselves in government, our goal would be to bring realism back into the climate debate. Symbolic politics are a thing of the past," Nilsen said. This announcement signals a potential change in Norway’s climate policies, should the Frp gain power.

In another development, Frp leader Sylvi Listhaug told NRK on Tuesday that the party would indeed support Norway cutting emissions by 40%. However, this figure falls short of the current goal.

Sveinung Rotevatn, a Stortinget representative for Venstre and the former climate and environment minister, argued against lowering climate ambitions. "It is the Storting that determines the climate goals. We agree on the climate goal we have, and we haven’t considered changing it," Rotevatnstated.
