In a recent statement, the Bali Health Agency (Dinkes Bali) has compared the symptoms of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) to those of the common flu, amidst the virus gaining traction in China. The agency’s head, I Nyoman Gede Anom, reassured local residents and tourists that the situation is under control and not akin to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Gede Anom, speaking in Denpasar on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, clarified that while HMPV may cause discomfort, it is not at the level of severity seen with COVID-19. "It’s just like the flu," he said. "It hasn’t reached the level of COVID-19 yet."
Currently, there have been no reported cases of HMPV in Indonesia or Bali, the popular tourist destination favored by Chinese travelers. Gede Anom revealed that Dinkes Bali has not yet received any guidelines on handling the virus, as the World Health Organization (WHO) has not declared it a global health issue.
To ensure the safety of tourists, Bali’s international airport, I Gusti Ngurah Rai, has been equipped with fever-detection facilities. This precautionary measure is aimed at identifying and isolating potential carriers of the virus.
"Whenever we detect a fever, especially among travelers from countries with known HMPV cases like China, we implement strict screenings," Gede Anom said, referring to past experiences with similar infectious diseases, such as the Monkey Pox.
As of now, Bali residents and tourists can breathe easy, knowing that the local health authorities are vigilant and prepared to respond promptly should any changes arise.
