VP-Elect from Venezuela Meets with US House Speaker; Advocates against Maduro‘s Power Grab
The elected President of Venezuela, Edmundo González Urrutia, held a strategic meeting with the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, as part of his international tour to consolidate political support amidst Nicolás Maduro‘s regime’s intentions to seize power on January 10, the presidential inauguration date.
The Comando con Venezuela coalition, led by María Corina Machado, hailed Mike Johnson’s commitment to Venezuela’s freedom and democracy, expressing this on their X account following the meeting.
"In a meeting with President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia, the US House Speaker, Mike Johnson, reaffirms his commitment to freedom, democracy, and respect for the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people," the coalition stated.
However, González Urrutia had to suspend part of his agenda in Washington due to the kidnapping of his son-in-law, Rafael Tudares, in Caracas. The opposition leader denounced Tudares’s arrest as a retaliatory act by Maduro’s regime and demanded his immediate release.
During his visit, González Urrutia also met with influential figures in US politics, including Senator Rick Scott of Florida, who publicly backed Venezuelan democracy on his social media platforms.
González Urrutia presented copies of electoral acts proving his victory in the July 28 elections with 67% of the vote to various US legislators. He also met with the Venezuelan community in Washington at the Organization of American States (OEA) headquarters.
After leaving the United States, González Urrutia will travel to Panama to meet with President José Raúl Mulino and participate in the "Reassertion of Democracy in Venezuela and America" event, which will feature prominent regional leaders such as former Presidents Felipe Calderón, Laura Chinchilla, and Andrés Pastrana, among other members of the IDEA (Iniciative for Democracy in Spain and the Americas). González Urrutia is also expected to address Venezuelan migrants residing in Panama.
Facing arrest warrants issued by Maduro’s regime offering rewards for his capture, González Urrutia remains committed to returning to Venezuela on January 10 to assume the presidency. The opposition leader’s international tour aims to rally support and coordinate efforts to address Venezuela’s ongoing crisis.
