Ukraine‘s Security Service (SBU) has prevented a pro-Kremlin provocateur from fleeing the country. The man, identified as Alexander Neyemt, had been wanted since July 2022 for glorifying Russian aggression and spreading propaganda against Ukraine.
According to the SBU and the Chernihiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, Neyemt, a 20-year-old resident of Cherkasy, was intercepted near a Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC MP) monastery in Chernivtsi region, where he was hiding and preparing to cross into the EU undetected.
Neyemt drew attention for his social media posts supporting Russian occupying forces, where he praised Chechnya’s leader Ramzan Kadyrov and his armed groups, and called on Ukrainian soldiers to surrender. He was charged under Article 436-2, Part 3, of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for supporting Russian aggression and spreading propaganda.
After receiving his indictment, Neyemt secretly left his home and hid in monasteries across several western regions, working as a manual laborer in exchange for shelter. Authorities believe he was planning to escape to Romania, having studied the language and scoped out border crossing routes.
Neyemt was arrested before he could implement his escape plan, and a court has ruled that he should remain in custody, with the possibility of bail. His case is still unfolding, with further details to be revealed in court.
The SBU’s swift action in this case underscores Ukraine’s commitment to apprehending and prosecuting those who support Russian aggression, even after they have attempted to go into hiding. Moreover, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance against pro-Russian propaganda and its ilk.
