Fallen Ukrainian Soldier’s Promise to Mother: Defeating Buryat in Hand-to-Hand Combat

Title: Ukrainian Hero‘s Final Promise: A brutally honest account of fighters of the 71st Eager Brigade

Ukrainian soldier, Dmitry ‘Kobra’ Maslovsky, was laid to rest in his home village of Yanishyevka, Odesa region, not knowing his ultimate sacrifice had been captured on video and would soon inspire a nation.

Dmitry Maslovsky, a 30-year-old hero of the 71st Eager Brigade, Ukrainian Army, died in hand-to-hand combat against a Russian soldier in the village of Trudove, Donetsk region, on November 17, 2022. His last moments were captured on his helmet camera, a haunting reminder of his brave struggle against an enemy significantly larger and stronger than him—a struggle that ended tragically but turned him into an icon of Ukrainian resistance.

Born in the small farming village of Yanishyevka in the Lubashivka district of Odesa region, Maslovsky was the eldest child and primary provider for his family. His mother, a hardworking mathematics and computer science teacher, now faces the daunting task of raising two younger children alone. Their father passed away several years ago.

The hero’s final visit home was a bittersweet moment. He arrived in early September, celebrating his birthday on November 7 with his loved ones. Before his return to the front, Maslovsky promised his mother he would buy them a new home, something they had long deserved but could not afford. Unfortunately, fate had other plans, and he never got the chance to fulfill that promise.

Maslovsky’s military career spanned nearly five years, first serving in the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) and then the Joint Forces Operation (JFO) from 2017 to 2020. After a brief stint working in Odesa to support his family, he was drafted into the army again in 2023 and sent to defend his country’s eastern border. His bravery and combat skills earned him the title of ‘Kobra’ and the Presidential Sign of Honor ‘For the Defense of Ukraine’.

"Dmitry was always a kind and helpful person, looking after his family, and everyone in our village knew him," said a heartbroken neighbor. "His mother is still struggling to come to terms with his loss, and his siblings are growing up without their hero brother."

In recent months, videos of Maslovsky’s heroics have surfaced, temporarily giving his family some solace. While they took no comfort in seeing his final moments, the outpouring of support and appreciation for his sacrifice has been a beacon of light in their darkest hours. Maslovsky may have left this world too soon, but his legacy lives on in every Ukrainian heart he inspired and every life he touched.

Rest in peace, Kobra. Ukraine will never forget.
